More New Work

Here are two more pieces of new work. A bit simpler in concept then 'Eggstrodinary' but still going with the idea of simplified imagery.

More Purchases

We went to the 'Spring Fling' sale at I Dress Myself (Eco-friendly screen printers) in Nottingham at the weekend and invested in some more artwork.

We bought 6 screen prints by Jon Burgerman that caught our eye, all are misprints but we think that just makes them more individual. The print that is on cardboard is even signed by him! Now we've just got to buy some frames and decide where to hang them all.

New work!

Here's a photo of one of my latest paintings, entitled 'Eggstrodinary'.

It's a whimsical, light-hearted piece depicting an egg wistfully dreaming of becoming extraordinary.

The idea behind the piece was to create something that was visually captivating whilst keeping the imagery simple but striking.

Purchased

This is the most recent piece of art-work that I've purchased and I LOVE him! He's a custom Munny (specifically a 'Raffy') created by the fantastic Stu Witter and Jon Burgerman.

He was part of a group of 5 customs and unfortunately my bank balance couldn't stretch to buy all of them.

This picture is entitled 'Emotionally Inadequate' and is by the amazing Jon Burgerman. It was one of the first pieces of art-work we purchased when my boyfriend and I bought our house. It's from a gallery in Nottingham called Cuadros and I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it (actually I almost walked into the window of the gallery trying to get a better look).

Its a one-off Posca pens on paper creation that is now hanging in the hall so it's the first thing everyone see's when they come in.

Clouds and Cheques

These are a couple more experiments using simplified images. These have been produced on a smaller scale (6" x 6" approx) and on board rather then canvas to get a different, smoother texture through the paint.

Fleur-De-Lis & Golden Eggs

These are a couple of pieces of work from a few years ago. I was playing around with taking a more complex image and simplifying it as well as looking into the different applications of spray paints.

My first 'experiment' was with the Fleur-De-Lis style image. I focused on a small section, expanded it and then recreated it on the same canvas.

I chose to use contrasting colours so as to enhance the juxtaposition of the stylised Fleur-De-Lis.

The contrast between the acrylic and the spray paint also helps to draw the eye further into the work.

This piece is titled 'Golden Egg', the idea for this piece came from a book I was reading at the time. Its another piece in which I was playing around with contrasting colours.

I used the Magenta and Lilac paint against the black to bring more colour to the piece and help emphasize the gold of the egg in the foreground.

The white outline against the back brings a starkness to the simplified image of a carton of eggs. By making one of the eggs golden I have made something everyday and ordinary into something precious and eye-catching.

I am planning to produce more work in a similar style of these two pieces, simplifying images and not getting distracted by the intricate details that can distract in a piece of work.

Exhibition

Early in March I had the chance to exhibit 3 pieces of my work at the Erewash Open Arts Exhibition.

This was held at The Beetroot Tree Gallery in Draycott.
I entered my pieces entitled:
'Three of a Kind'
'Silhouette'
'I'm Melting!!!'

It was good to exhibit along side other artists from the area, to see the variety of work being produced locally and on a non-comercial scale.

3rd Year Paintings

These are two of my favourite paintings that I produced in my final year at University. I used a new technique of 'scrapping' paint across a surface (in this case Canvas) to create these pieces.

This was another painting i made using the same technique but trying a brighter variety of hues to change the 'mood' of the piece.

These two Dunny's were made using thin MDF and cut-out canvas

'Silhouette' & 'Into the Light' are two paintings I produced for my Final show. 'Silhouette' was recently in an exhibition at The Beetroot Tree Gallery in Draycott, Derby.

2nd Year Paintings

During my second year at University I experimented with layers, colours and moods. The top three pictures are from the first term, the bottom two are from a joint project in which we looked into the poem 'The Jabberwocky' and produced work that represented our interpretations of the imagery in the poem.
